Although it has been written out of history books, over a third of the cowboys in the Wild West were African American. Black Cowboys in the United States have a rich, though largely unknown, history and a culture that is still thriving today.
As part of an initative to bring genuine diversity to children’s literature, we partnered with photographers Max Becher and Andrea Robbins to create a non-fiction children’s book featuring Black Cowboy culture. Becher and Robbins travelled across the USA capturing moments in these cowboys, cowgirls, and their families lives.
This book launched in Fall 2015. It is internationally distributed and is available at SFMoMA, the Studio Museum in Harlem, and the Perez Art Museum in Miami.
